History and Architecture
BUILT IN 1929, A PINNACLE YEAR FOR ARCHITECTURE, 1014 Boylston Street in Brookline is a sprawling, Georgian Revival estate designed by architects Little & Russell on behalf of Robert Treat Paine. Paine resided at 325 Heath Street and built 1014 Boylston for his daughter, Elizabeth (Paine) Metcalf, and her husband, Thomas Metcalf. The Metcalfs, well-known arts patrons, were the founders of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, as well as supporters of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Now known as the Paine Estate, 1014 Boylston Street is an outstanding property combining gracious period architecture with stunning interiors, resulting in a wonderful family home in this most special setting.
Set back from the main road to ensure complete privacy, the restrained brick façade of Paine Estate is approached by a gated drive that leads to a circular courtyard, and is characterized by a symmetrical facade, classical detailing, hipped roofs, and multi-pane windows. The house was designed in a linear plan that allows the principal rooms to enjoy beautiful Southern exposures. It is reminiscent of other historic Georgian Revival examples, including Houghton Hall in the United Kingdom, Gunston Hall in Virginia, the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary, and Governor's Palace and the Capitol building in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The expansive layout encompasses four levels of living space, featuring formal and family entertaining areas, outdoor spaces, and seven bedrooms, including a luxurious primary suite with dual bathrooms and dressing rooms, as well as a private balcony. Additional features include an exercise and club room, as well as a wine cellar.
